The area of Carteret County is approximately 563 square miles.  This coastal community is geographically the southernmost portion of the famed Outer Banks, bordered on the north by Pamlico Sound and on the east and south by the Atlantic Ocean.  Located on the central coastline of North Carolina, this region of forest, farmland, barrier islands, and marshes jigsawed by rivers, inlets, bays and sounds, has an average elevation of twelve feet above sea level.
